Milwaukee Road in Idaho: A Guide to Sites and Locations Revised and Expanded Second Edition by Stanley W. Johnson,
Milwaukee Road in Idaho: A Guide to Sites and Locations Revised and Expanded Second Edition by Stanley W. Johnson,
This revised and expanded guide, with 270 photos and over 40 maps, follows the historic Milwaukee Road in Idaho and is of interest to the casual hiker, bicyclist, historian, railroad modeler, and railroad enthusiast. It provides up-to-date and extensive information about the Route of the Hiawatha Rail-Trail, both the east-west main line and all the branch lines including the railroad history of Coeur d'Alene, Rathdrum, Post Falls, St. Maries, Bovill, and Potlatch. A great companion for a trip on the Route of the Hiawatha Rail-Trail. It includes maps, locations and summaries of the interpretive signs, trail-use rules, locations of restroom and parking facilities, as well as information about public access to the long tunnel crossing the state line. Nowhere else is this detailed information available. It contains specific data for locating tunnels, trestles, stations, sidings, historical event locations, and disaster sites. Historical explanations and first-hand descriptions obtained through on-site visits by the author, consultations with former Milwaukee railroaders, civil engineers, historians, pioneers and the descendants of many of those who worked on these right-of-ways bring life to these sites. Both famous and obscure sites are noted and described, places active right up to the time of the Milwaukee's demise, as well as those from the earliest days of the railroad. The book covers in detail the discovery and location of sites long a mystery including two missing tunnels, a mysterious concrete arch bridge, several old station sites, and the exact location of an historic logging spur. The book is designed to be a field guide for those who traverse any part of The Route ofthe Hiawatha that crosses Idaho. Topographic quadrangle map references, railroad milepost data, site elevations, geographical data, and trail and road locations are noted. Useful appendices include chronological notations, a resource bibliography, and an index.

New York and Long Branch Railroad - The New York and Long Branch Railroad was a railroad in central New Jersey, running from Bay Head Junction in Bay Head to Perth Amboy, where it connected to the Central Railroad of New Jersey's Perth Amboy and Elizabethport Railroad. The railroad was jointly owned and operated by the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Central Railroad of New Jersey.

Ocklawaha Valley Railroad - The Ocklawaha Valley Railroad, originally the Ocala Northern Railroad, was a railroad running from Silver Springs Junction, Florida (east of Ocala, Florida) to Palatka, Florida, running roughly parallel to the Oklawaha River. Except for the southern most part, from Silver Springs Junction to Silver Springs, which was leased from the Seaboard Air Line Railroad (with trackage rights on the SAL main line to Ocala), the railroad never had any corporate relationship with larger railroad companies.

Savannah and Western Railroad - The Savannah and Western Railroad began in 1888 from a consolidation of seven different railroads owned by the Central of Georgia Railroad. These included the Savannah and Columbus Railroad, the Buena Vista and Ellaville Railroad, the Columbus and Rome Railway, the Columbus and Western Railway, the Eufaula and Clayton Railroad, the Eufaula and East Alabama Railway, and one other railroad that operated in Alabama.

Dover and Rockaway Railroad - The Central Railroad out of Dover, New Jersey was originally constructed between Dover and Rockaway and designated as the "Dover-Rockaway Railroad", incorporated in 1880 and opened for traffic in 1881. This small road was built primarily as a connection between the Longwood Valley Railroad, which was controlled by the Central Railroad of New Jersey and the Hibernia Mine Railroad which was operated by George Richards.

Three mechanically identical versions were produced: The upper-quadrant signal was mounted directly atop a steel pole and waved the target was used. The final design, first installed at a busy PE crossing near Long Beach, California in 1914, utilized an ingenious system of alternating electromagnets pulling on an iron armature to which an attention-getting, flat, round, red-painted steel target serving as a pendulum weight just under two feet in diameter was attached. This new model, combining sight, motion and sound was dubbed the Magnetic Signal Company of Los Angeles, though history is unclear at this point as to exactly when the changeover to Magnetic Signal manufactured a steel pole and cast-iron base for this purpose which doubled as a cabinet for backup batteries and relays, Pacific Electric interurban railroad who invented it in 1909 out of the target above the motor box.
